Route 601 (Abex Road) Bridge Rehabilitation Project to Start in Somerset County

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) today announced that George S. Hann & Son, Inc., of Fort Littleton, will begin a project Tuesday, April 11, 2023, to rehabilitate the bridge that carries Route 601 (Abex Road) over Rhoads Creek in Conemaugh Township, Somerset County.

On Tuesday, the contractor will install four temporary traffic signals to create single-lane traffic control for work to be completed one lane at a time. Two of the signals placed will be for the private driveways located within the project work zone. The work will begin with the closure of the northbound lane.

This portion of the project calls for the removal of the structure's bituminous surface to replace it with a concrete pavement surface. The existing concrete curb and structure-mounted guide rail also will be removed and replaced with an F-shaped concrete barrier.

Delays are not anticipated beyond the normal cycle of a traffic light. Motorists are advised to use caution, obey all traffic signs, signals, and watch for construction personnel and vehicles.

Construction will continue with closure and repairs of the southbound lane once the northbound work is finished. The project limits extend along Route 601 (Abex Road) for a distance of 708 feet. The $2.5 million project is weather dependent and is expected to be completed by the end of August 2023.
