Companion project to East Berlin Road and Stoney Point Road project; Open house for both projects is May 8
Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) invites the public to an online plan display regarding the Route 234 (East Berlin Road) and Peepytown Road intersection safety improvement project. This project is located in Reading Township, approximately 1.4 miles east of the Village of Hampton.
The purpose of this project is to improve safety and address future traffic demands for the Route 234 intersection with Peepytown Road. Geometric deficiencies in the roadway limit sight distance along Route 234 and are being addressed with the proposed project.
This project may consist of an intersection realignment to improve safety and traffic flow with several potential intersection alternatives.
The project will be constructed in stages and detours along Peepytown Road are anticipated. During the reconstruction of Peepytown Road (Route 1018), a six-mile east detour or seven-mile west detour route will be available. The east detour will use Route1019 (Pine Run Road), Route 194 (Abbottstown Street), and then Route 234 (West King Street/East Berlin Road). The west detour will use Route 1019 (Pine Run Road), Route 94 (Carlisle Pike), Route 1007 (Stoney Point Road), and then Route 234 (East Berlin Road). The use of detours along Route 234 and the entire traffic control scheme will be determined once an intersection alternative is selected.
Information, including the roadway plans and an interactive comment form, can be found by visiting the PennDOT District 8 website PennDOT District 8, clicking Projects Near You listed on the left side of the page, then the District 8 Projects, and choosing East Berlin Road and Peepytown Road Safety Improvements Project.
This digital version of the information will be available to view online from May 1, 2025, to May 30, 2025. Public comments will be received during this 30-day period.
The purpose of the plans display is to introduce the project and receive public input regarding any questions or concerns with the project.
This is a reminder that an open house is scheduled for 6:00-8:00 PM Thursday, May 8, 2025, at the Reading Township Community Center (Firehall) along South Firehouse Alley in the Village of Hampton to share information and get input on the proposed alternatives for this project as well as the companion East Berlin Road and Stoney Point Road Safety Improvement Project.
