The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) invites the public to an online plans display regarding the State Route 3001 (South George Street) bridge replacement project. This project is located over Tributary to South Branch of Codorus Creek in York Township, York County.

The purpose of this project is to replace the bridge with a precast concrete box culvert and provide continued safe and efficient crossing of State Route 3001 over Tributary to South Branch of Codorus Creek. The span length will be increased and the roadway width over the culvert will be widen slightly. Minor approach work includes new pavement, drainage, guide rail and signing upgrades. The stream will be bypassed with a temporary pump-around during construction. The proposed roadway curb-to-curb width will remain similar to the existing conditions, consisting of 11-foot lanes and 8-foot shoulders. 

This section of State Route 3001 (South George Street) has an average daily traffic volume of 6,774 vehicles per day.

The bridge will be closed for approximately 2 months to all traffic during construction. The proposed traffic control plan will utilize a detour during construction. A passenger car detour, 2.7 miles in length, will use Route 3054, Country Club Road, and Route 4001, Grantley Road. Separate truck detours will be used for northbound and southbound truck traffic. Northbound trucks will use PA 182 to I-83 to PA 74 to Route 3054, Rathton Road (4.9 miles). Southbound trucks will detour to Route 3075, Business I-83, to PA 182 with a detour length of 3.1 miles. There are overhead utilities in the vicinity of the project that will be relocated for bridge construction. 

The project is currently in design. Overall construction is anticipated to last approximately 2 months during the summer of 2028 at an estimated cost of $1,800,000.

The purpose of the plans display is to introduce the project and solicit public input, questions, or concerns regarding the project.​

Project Description

The South George Street bridge replacement project is located along South George Street (State Route 3001 Section 061) over Tributary to South Branch of Codorus Creek in York Township, York County, approximately 1¼ miles south of the City of York. The purpose of this project is to replace the existing slab bridge and provide continued safe and efficient crossing of State Route 3001 over Tributary to South Branch of Codorus Creek.

The project involves the replacement of the existing slab bridge with a precast concrete box culvert. The overall geometry of the bridge will not be affected by the repairs. Minor approach work includes new pavement, drainage, guide rail and signing upgrades. The proposed bridge curb-to-curb width will increase to two 11-foot lanes and 8-foot shoulders. 

Work is expected to take place in 2028.

Environmental

The project is located in an urban setting with rolling terrain, with residential development in all four quadrants. There are no bicycle or pedestrian facilities for this route. Other environmental efforts for the project include investigating historical, archeological and aquatic resources. 

Utilities

There are overhead utilities in the vicinity of the project that will be relocated to accommodate the bridge construction. 

Right-of-Way

Permanent and temporary right-of-way acquisitions are anticipated to allow the construction of the project. 

Maintenance and Protection of Traffic

The bridge will be closed for approximately 2 months to all traffic during construction. Detours will be implemented for passenger vehicles and trucks. A passenger car detour, 2.7 miles in length, will use State Route 3054, Country Club Road, and State Route 4001, Grantley Road. Separate truck detours will be used for northbound and southbound truck traffic. Northbound trucks will use PA 182 to I-83 to PA 74 to State Route 3054, Rathton Road (4.9 miles). Southbound trucks will detour to State Route 3075, Business I-83, to PA 182 with a detour length of 3.1 miles. Access to all driveways within the project limits will be maintained during construction. The duration of the detour is expected to be approximately 2 months.
