Shapiro Administration Announces $100 Million for Public EV Chargers in Communities as Pennsylvania Continues To Lead the Nation in NEVI Program

PennDOT will direct Community Charging funding through NEVI to be made available for Southeastern Pennsylvania, additional regions will open throughout 2026.

West Chester, PA – Today, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) launched the Community Charging phase of the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program, continuing the Commonwealth’s role as the national leader in the NEVI program. Through the Community Charging funding rounds, the Shapiro Administration will direct $100 million in federal funding to build public EV charging stations in Pennsylvania communities.

"Community charging is the culmination of an extraordinary effort by the Shapiro Administration to deliver accessible EV infrastructure to PA travelers," said PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll. “We’re excited to bring EV chargers to neighborhoods around the Commonwealth.”

Community Charging funding will be made available by region, beginning with the southeastern region, which includes Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia counties. Local transportation planning agencies will determine the specific locations/areas within the region that are prioritized for investment, but all publicly available locations within the region are eligible to apply. Approximately $34 million will be available for projects in these counties.

PennDOT has released a survey for interested organizations to connect with electric vehicle charging station builders and operators to partner with on submissions. The survey is available now at www.pa.gov/evcommunity.

Today’s funding announcement builds on the $54 million already committed to public charging stations across the Commonwealth through the NEVI program, demonstrating Pennsylvania’s continued success as a national leader. Pennsylvania leads the nation in stations built using NEVI funds with 29, representing an investment of $17 million. Additionally, there are 54 stations in various stages of planning and construction.

“The Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission applauds PennDOT’s leadership in expanding community charging facilities throughout southeastern Pennsylvania,” said Ariella Maron, DVRPC’s executive director. “These investments enable individuals from rural areas to the urban core to get to where they need to go efficiently and confidently.”

"This is a very exciting and meaningful investment for communities across Chester County, which is home to more electric vehicle registrations than any other county in the Commonwealth," said Josh Maxwell, Chair of the Chester County Board of Commissioners. "We look forward to working with PennDOT to expand the network of vehicle chargers across our region, making EV transportation more convenient and further reducing our impacts on the climate and public health."

Funding Opportunities for additional regions are expected to open as follows:

  • West (PennDOT Districts 1, 11, 12 and parts of 10), April-May 2026
  • East (PennDOT Districts 8, 5 and parts of 4), August-September 2026
  • Central (PennDOT Districts 9, 2, 3, and parts of 10 and 4), August-September 2026

Since the first Pennsylvania NEVI station opened in December 2023, NEVI-funded charging stations in Pennsylvania have supported over 80,000 charging sessions, over 9.6 million estimated miles driven, and reduced CO2 emissions by more than 2,000 metric tons.

Additionally, PennDOT released the NEVI Corridor Connections Funding Opportunity on October 7, 2025, which later closed on January 30, 2026. Awards from this funding round are expected to be announced soon with projects focused on constructing EV charging stations along major roadways to strengthen long-distance travel beyond the previously designated Alternative Fuel Corridors. Projects funded from the Corridor Connections funding round will improve range confidence for drivers who are considering travel with an EV across and throughout the Commonwealth. Please visit the PennDOT website for more information.

The U.S. Department of Transportation is currently withholding Congressionally-apportioned funding that would have supported EV charging construction in Pennsylvania and created new, good-paying jobs. That is why Governor Josh Shapiro sued the Trump Administration once again for breaking the law and taking dollars out of the Commonwealth. The Governor also sued the Trump Administration alongside 15 other states over the summer and won, reinstating the NEVI program and ensuring projects like the one being announced today to continue throughout Pennsylvania.

Motorists can check conditions on major roadways by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information and access to more than 1,200 traffic cameras. 511PA is also available through a smartphone application for iPhone and Android devices, by calling 5-1-1, or by following regional X alerts
