Box Culvert Replacement Starts Monday on Route 22 in Mifflin County

Clearfield, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) alerted motorists that work on a box culvert replacement project along Route 22 in Wayne Township, Mifflin County, will start on Monday, June 26. Replacing the structure, which spans a tributary of Long Hollow Run approximately four miles northwest of Newton Hamilton, will improve the overall condition from poor to good.

Starting Monday, the contractor plans to begin drilling holes for temporary shoring posts in the roadway. Flaggers on the road will provide traffic control while the contractor completes this drilling. PennDOT anticipates the drilling will take a week to complete.

After completing the drilling, the contractor will replace the bridge using half-width phasing. Traffic control will consist of temporary traffic signals enforcing an alternating traffic pattern that will see drivers take turns crossing the bridge via the open lane. The contractor will install the shoring posts after it reduces the bridge to a single lane.

Overall work on the project includes removing the existing box culvert, installing its replacement, approach paving, guide rail installation, and pavement marking. CH&D Enterprises, Inc. of New Stanton, PA, is the contractor on this $1.3 million project. PennDOT anticipates completion in early September, but all work is weather dependent.
