PennDOT Line Painting Operations Starting in Northwest Region

Drivers Are Reminded to Not Follow Too Closely Behind Equipment

The northwest region of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that line painting operations have started for the season.

The six-county northwest region, which includes Crawford, Erie, Forest, Mercer, Venango, and Warren counties, operates two crews to paint more than 8,000 miles lines on state-owned roadways each year. The equipment is scheduled to complete line-painting operations throughout the region in the coming months, as weather permits.

Motorists who encounter a line-painting operation should follow these guidelines:

  • Stay back at least 500 feet from the equipment.
  • Don’t drive on wet paint lines.
  • Don’t pass the paint truck or shadow vehicle.
  • Be patient as the paint truck will pull over periodically to let traffic pass.

Weather conditions often effect how quickly line paint will dry. Under ideal temperatures and humidity, the average time for the paint is 90 to 120 seconds. In spring and fall, it can take several more minutes for the paint to completely dry.

As evening temperatures increase, line painting on the interstate will be completed during overnight hours.

Drivers are responsible for operating their vehicles within the roadway lines and follow all warning and advisory signage. Additional information on the statewide line painting effort is available on PennDOT’s website.

PennDOT’s northwest region shares weekly updates on other roadway maintenance activities through email blasts and the District 1 Maintenance and Traffic Bulletins section of the website.
