Pedestrians are Reminded to Follow Marked Detour for Crossing the Bayfront Parkway

The pedestrian detour includes Third Street and Holland Street on the city side of the parkway, and East Front Street and West Front Street Extension on the waterfront side.

As the Bayfront Parkway and State Street closure continues, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is reminding pedestrians to use the posted detour.

The Bayfront Parkway (Route 4034) is closed between Sassafras Street Extension and Holland Street, and State Street is closed from Second Street to East Front Street in the City of Erie, Erie County.

“We are stressing to residents and visitors that there is no pedestrian access or crossing of the parkway at State Street,” said Dax Nulph, District 1 Assistant Executive - Construction. “For the safety of those walking between the city and the waterfront, it is important that everyone follows the detour signs, uses the marked crosswalks, and takes advantage of the signalized intersections.”

The pedestrian detour includes Third Street and Holland Street on the city side of the parkway, and East Front Street and West Front Street Extension on the waterfront side. Pedestrians can also cross the parkway west of the closure at a crosswalk near the entrance to Erie Water Works.

In preparation for the detour PennDOT made several pedestrian safety and access improvements along Third, West and East Front streets, including temporary signals, speed humps, high visibility crosswalks and pedestrian flashing beacons.

A detour for through traffic vehicles is posted using Route 5 (12th Street) and Greengarden Boulevard. Access to hotels, restaurants, and facilities along the waterfront is available via Sassafras Street Extension and West Front Street Extension or Holland Street and East Front Street.

The closure is expected to remain in place for approximately a year as major work on the Central Bayfront Parkway Project is completed, including the reconstruction of State Street and the parkway to create a grade-separated intersection with lanes to take through traffic beneath the intersection, shorter at-grade crosswalks across the parkway, and new traffic signals. Work will also be done near Holland Street to prepare for the construction of a roundabout and pedestrian bridge at that intersection.
