The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today the early completion of major work on the safety improvement project at the intersection of Route 18 and Williamson Road (Route 4006) at the border of West Salem, Hempfield and Sugar Grove townships in Mercer County.

The Route 18 and Williamson Road Intersection Project included realigning Williamson Road (Route 4006) on the east side to be directly opposite the west side. It was previously offset by 10 to 12 feet.

Other work included radii improvements at all corners of the intersection and sight distance improvements on the southeast corner, as well as drainage upgrades, milling, paving, sign updates, and pavement markings.

After preliminary work began in fall 2024, a detour was implemented on April 14, 2025, to signal the start of major construction. The detour was lifted on July 14, 2025, marking the completion of major work several weeks ahead of schedule.

Additional work off the roadway, including landscaping, will be finished in the coming weeks.

The contractor is Glenn O. Hawbaker of State College, PA. The contract cost is $932,932, which is to be paid entirely with federal funds.
