The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced on Thursday, June 18 that construction has been completed 15 months ahead of schedule on a $12.1 million project to replace the Brownsville Road bridge over Neshaminy Creek Brownsville Road. The bridge and road were reopened the morning of June 18.
The project replaced the existing 68-year-old four-span prestressed concrete box beam bridge with a three-span prestressed concrete bulb tee beam bridge in Lower Southampton and Middletown townships. The new structure, measuring 278 feet long and 41.375 feet wide, is approximately 24 feet longer and 9.875 feet wider than the former structure.
In addition, the approach roadways will be reconstructed to raise the vertical alignment over Neshaminy Creek to provide an adequate waterway opening and to slightly improve the existing sight distance on both approaches to the bridge.
Initially work was planned under staged construction with traffic being maintained using a one-lane alternating flow pattern under the control of temporary traffic signals. The anticipated construction was predicted to take 34 months to complete.
After careful overview of the project, and discussions with stakeholders, construction took place utilizing a full detour. The new traffic control plan shortened construction by 15 months. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.
Brownsville Road was scheduled for full closure beginning, Monday, March 31, 2025, through approximately fall 2026.
During the closure, motorists were directed to use Brownsville Road, Bristol Road, (Route 213) Bridgeton Pike/West Maple Avenue, and Old Lincoln Highway. (Please see detour map under Resources)
