The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is informing motorists of work to replace the Route 601 (Hollsopple Bridge) in Conemaugh Township, Somerset County. The project begins the week of July 7 with demolition and removal of the existing structure.
A 15.6-mile traffic detour will start the week of July 14 that follows Route 403 (South Main Street) to U.S. 219 (Flight 93 Memorial Highway) to Route 56 (Scalp Avenue) to Route 601 (Seanor Road). Opposing traffic will follow the same route in reverse. The detour is anticipated to be lifted in August 2025.
The bridge will be replaced with a precast box culvert and additional work will take place to improve the alignment of Route 601 with the intersection at Route 403 (South Main Street), along with drainage upgrades.
JVI Group, Inc., of York Springs, PA is performing the work on this $1,102,041.81 project that is expected to be completed by the end of August, but has an allowable extension to mid-October 2025.
New Enterprise Stone and Lime, Inc., New Enterprise, Pa., is the contractor for the $23,500,000 project, which includes improvements along 10-miles of I-99 from the median cross-over near Newry to 17th Street exit in Blair County. The work is scheduled to be completed in September of 2025.
As always, PennDOT stresses extra caution in all work zones. Motorists should drive slowly, eliminate all distractions, and stay alert for direction from advanced signage.
Additionally, PennDOT reminds motorists that as of June 5, 2025, the "Paul Miller's Law" is in effect. This law prohibits the use of hand-held devices while driving, even while stopped temporarily due to traffic, a red light, or other momentary delay. Violation of this law is punishable by way of summary citations issued by any Pennsylvania Law Enforcement officer. We strongly urge motorists to make safe choices, put phones out of reach and don’t text and drive.
