The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is advising motorists to plan for delays beginning Monday, July 14, 2025, associated with High Friction Surface Treatment (HFST) project in Bedford, Cambria, Fulton, Huntingdon, and Somerset counties.
Motorists can expect standard daylight flagging operations and delays of up to 15 minutes as crews set long-term traffic controls.
RAM Construction Services of Michigan, Inc., Linovia, Michigan, is the contractor for the $2,697,146.23 project for HFST on several state routes in five of District 9’s six counties.
Locations for the project are as follows:
Bedford County
- Route 36 in Bedford County
Cambria County
- U.S. 22
Fulton County
- Route 30
- Route 522
- Route 915
Huntingdon County
- Route 350
- Route 655
- Route 747
- Route 829
Somerset County
- Route 56
The contractor will move around these locations during the course of this project and the starting locations are subject to change, as all work is weather dependent. All work is expected to be completed by the end of September 2025.
HFST typically applied to roadways, including horizontal curves, intersections, and steep grades, to improve grip. The project also includes centerline rumble strips and pavement markings.
As always, PennDOT stresses extra caution in all work zones. Motorists should drive slowly, eliminate all distractions, and stay alert for direction from advanced signage and flaggers.
Additionally, PennDOT reminds motorists that as of June 5, 2025, the "Paul Miller's Law" is in effect. This law prohibits the use of hand-held devices while driving, even while stopped temporarily due to traffic, a red light, or other momentary delay. Violation of this law is punishable by way of summary citations issued by any Pennsylvania Law Enforcement officer. We strongly urge motorists to make safe choices, put phones out of reach and don’t text and drive.
Motorists can check conditions on major roadways by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information and access to more than 1,000 traffic cameras. 511PA is also available through a smartphone application for iPhone and Android devices, by calling 5-1-1, or by following regional X alerts.
