Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that the online plans display has been updated for the Middletown Road Safety and Congestion Improvement Project in Derry and Londonderry townships and Hummelstown Borough, in Dauphin County. The updates can be found by going to the project page and selecting Design Changes & Commonly Asked Questions located under the Resources tab.
The project area includes a 3-mile corridor along Middletown Road from PA 283 to US 322 in Derry and Londonderry townships and Hummelstown Borough, Dauphin County.
The primary purpose of the project is to enhance the safety and efficiency of the corridor through a combination of roadway widening, access control measures, and targeted intersection improvements. These efforts are proposed to address current traffic issues and prepare the corridor for future demands.
An in-person open house featuring a public plans display was held on August 25, 2025, at the Derry Township Municipal Complex Administration Building. An online plans display was posted on August 21, 2025, and public comments were received from that date through September 25, 2025.
The design team received numerous valuable comments from the public and municipal officials that enhanced the team's observations and understanding of corridor needs.
All comments were reviewed and considered, and if appropriate, were factored into the design in some manner. Some minor items that were suggested, such as cutting back vegetation, adding specific signs at select locations, signal adjustments, or requesting speed enforcement, etc.), were considered for short-term implementation versus waiting for the construction project several years away.
Other comments that were more substantive in nature were also weighed, and in some instances resulted in the design team making reasonable adjustments to the corridor design, which will be incorporated into the project construction phase.
To view the proposed changes, go the PennDOT District 8 website, PennDOT District 8, clicking Projects Near You listed on the left side of the page, then District 8 Projects, and choosing Design Changes & Commonly Asked Questions located under the Resources tab.
This section of Middletown Road has an average daily traffic volume of 16,000 vehicles per day, 5% being trucks.
Construction activities are expected to be staged to minimize disruptions to traffic and maintain access for residents, businesses, and emergency services. Detours may be needed for side road realignment.
The project is currently in the preliminary design phase, and construction is anticipated to take place during the 2028-2029 construction seasons, subject to all approvals, environmental clearances, and funding availability.
