Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) invites the public to an online plan display regarding the Route 216 bridge preservation project along Route 216 (Blooming Grove Road) over Lake Marburg in Penn and West Manheim townships, York County, approximately 4 miles east of Hanover. The purpose of this project is to preserve the life of the existing bridge and provide a continued safe and efficient crossing of Route 216 over Lake Marburg.
The existing five-span prestressed concrete multi-I-beam bridge was built in 1967 and over the years the deck wearing surface and bridge deck joints have deteriorated and are no longer functioning as intended.
The project involves performing bridge preservation work consisting of replacing the bridge deck joints, repairing any deck deterioration, providing a new wearing surface, mill and overlay the approach roadways and new pavement markings. Additionally, asphalt sidewalk ramps will be constructed at each end of the bridge along the left side. The current roadway geometry will remain unchanged with 12-foot lanes and 4-foot shoulders.
This section of Route 216 has an average daily traffic volume of 9008 vehicles per day (vpd).
The bridge will be closed to all traffic for approximately 2 months during construction. The detour will be approximately 7.9 miles using Route 3068 (Grandview Road), Route 3070 (Black Rock Road), Route 3058 (Hobart Road), and Route 3037 (Blue Hill Road).
The project is currently in design, and construction work is anticipated to begin in Spring 2026 and last approximately 2 months.
The purpose of the plans display is to introduce the project and solicit public input, questions, or concerns regarding the project.
A digital version of the information will be available to view online, with a public comment accepted through October 3, 2025.
