Water Main Installation Continues Next Week on Hunting Park Avenue in Philadelphia

King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that the Philadelphia Water Department will continue construction on a water main tie-in on Hunting Park Avenue next week under a $7.8 million project to remove the 5th Street bridge over the abandoned Conrail line and reconstruct the roadway between Hunting Park Avenue and Bristol Street in the Hunting Park section of Philadelphia.

The 5th Street structure is one of two deteriorating bridges that PennDOT is removing under this state funded project. Construction finished in May 2022 to remove the bridge that carried Erie Avenue over an abandoned Conrail line and to rebuild the roadway between 3rd Street and Lawrence Street.

On Monday, August 21, through Friday, August 25, from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, a single lane closure will be in place on Hunting Park Avenue between N. 3rd Street and N. 6th Street for water main installation.

5th Street between Hunting Park Avenue and Bristol Street, and Bristol Street at the intersection with 5th Street remain closed for roadway reconstruction and utility improvements. Drivers will continue to follow the posted detour routes.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through or near the work areas because backups and delays will occur.

The purpose of this project is to remove a deteriorating bridge in poor condition, provide a long-term transportation facility that is built to current standards and capable of handling the volume of expected traffic along this city street, and ensure a safe and efficient movement of multi-model transportation along a locally important network.
