Philadelphia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that various construction activities including milling, paving and bridge repair will continue at night next week on Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expressway) in Philadelphia under a $36.8 million project to resurface and repair nearly five miles of the interstate, the associated on-and-off ramps, and more than 20 bridges.
Motorists are advised of the following travel restrictions:
- Sunday, August 11, and Monday, August 12, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, the ramp from eastbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) to northbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway) will be closed and detoured for paving and bridge repair. Motorists will be directed to continue east on I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway), exit at Montgomery Drive and use westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) to access the ramp to northbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway).
- Sunday, August 11, through Friday, August 16, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, a lane closure will be in place on eastbound and westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) between the Girard Avenue/Philadelphia Zoo and 30th Street interchanges for milling.
- Monday, August 12, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, a lane closure will be in place on the ramp/merge from eastbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) to southbound U.S. 1 (City Avenue) for guiderail installation.
- Monday, August 12, through Friday, August 16, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, the first ramp from westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) to southbound U.S. 1 (City Avenue) will be closed for bridge deck repair. Motorists will be directed to continue westbound on I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) to access the second ramp to southbound U.S. 1 (City Avenue).
- Monday, August 12, through Friday, August 16, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, the ramp from southbound U.S. 1 (City Avenue) to westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) will be closed and detoured for bridge deck repair. Motorists will be directed to use eastbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway), exit at Montgomery Drive and use the ramp to access westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway).
- Monday, August 12, through Friday, August 16, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, the ramp from Girard Avenue to westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) will be closed and detoured for guiderail installation, milling and paving. Motorists will be directed to turn right onto Belmont Avenue and turn right onto Montgomery Drive to access the ramp to westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway).
- Wednesday, August 14, through Friday, August 16, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, the ramp from Girard Avenue to eastbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) will be closed and detoured for guiderail installation, milling and paving. Motorists will be directed to turn right onto Belmont Avenue and turn right onto Montgomery Drive to access the ramp to westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway).
Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through or near the work areas because backups and delays will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.
Under this contract, PennDOT's contractor will mill and overlay I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) pavement from U.S. 1 to I-676; perform concrete base, shoulder and barrier repair and replacement as needed; construct minor grade adjustments for existing inlets at select locations; replace damaged signs; install new pavement markings, delineators and rumble strips; and perform bridge repairs.
