PennDOT Honors Local Employees for Innovation

Dunmore, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) recognized PennDOT employees with Innovation Awards for creating efficiencies and implementing best practices at a ceremony this month. Three team members from PennDOT’s District 4 which represents Lackawanna, Luzerne, Pike, Susquehanna, Wayne, and Wyoming counties were among the honorees.

“Coming from a variety of different perspectives and backgrounds, PennDOT’s workforce of nearly 12,000 is uniquely equipped to meet the needs of an industry that changes every day,” said PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll. “These awards honor PennDOT’s most creative thinkers, who go out every day and find innovative ways to meet the challenge head-on.”

The annual Innovation Awards Ceremony recognizes some of the best and most innovative ideas cultivated and implemented by PennDOT employees across the Department. The ceremony honors employees who looked at the work they were doing, the processes, systems and tools they were using, and found ways to improve the quality, safety and value of the products and services PennDOT provides. Each employee receives a custom award that represents PennDOT's appreciation for their dedication and commitment to efficient and effective operations at all levels of the organization.

Carroll and other department executives honored winners Andy Firment, Acting Assistant District Executive for Design, Kaitlyn Drumheller, P.E., Maintenance Services Engineer, Lonell C. Tomaine, P.E., Assistant District Executive for Maintenance - District 4 for the Cape Seal Project on Route 11 in Lackawanna County.

Cape Seal is a highly effective pavement preservation method that combines a seal coat and micro surfacing. The seal coat addresses oxidized pavement and seals cracks, while the micro surfacing creates a smooth driving surface for motorists. Using Cape Seal can extend pavement life by eight to ten years. This project was unique, representing a successful collaboration between PennDOT and industry partners to enhance roadway quality for the traveling public.

“I am proud of the dedication and hard work our team has invested in delivering the state’s first Cape Seal project,” said PennDOT Engineering District 4 Executive Jonathan A. Eboli, P.E. “District 4 remains committed to pursuing innovative, cost-effective solutions to enhance our roadways for years to come.”
