Update to Work on Edison and Priestley Bridges in Northumberland County

Montoursville, PA – Drivers are advised that a bridge maintenance and roadway resurfacing project continues on Route 405 in Upper Augusta Township and in the City of Sunbury, Northumberland County.

On Monday, June 8, the contractor, Glenn O. Hawbaker, Inc. will begin applying a new wearing surface on the two bridges spanning the Susquehanna River between Northumberland Borough and the City of Sunbury. Work includes application of an epoxy overlay, placing strip seal dam gland and placing pavement markings.

Due to forecasted high temperatures next week, operations will be conducted during overnight hours, which provide more suitable conditions for applying the epoxy overlay. Once placed, the material requires adequate curing time before traffic can be restored to the roadway.

Traffic Impacts

  • Southbound Route 405 traffic will be detoured via Route 11, Route 61, and Route 405 through the end of June.
  • Northbound Route 405 traffic will be maintained within the work zone.

Access to the marina, businesses, and residential homes will be maintained using the established detour.  The pedestrian and bicycle sidewalks on the bridges will remain open as normal throughout the detour.

Routine bridge preservation and preventative maintenance activities such as applying epoxy overlays, replacing seals, cleaning, painting, and performing minor repairs are essential to maintaining infrastructure and extending the service life of a structure. Preventative maintenance is a cost‑effective approach that helps preserve bridge integrity and reduces the likelihood of major repairs or full‑scale replacements, which can cause significant disruptions to drivers.

Glenn O. Hawbaker, Inc. is the prime contractor for this $3.7 million roadway improvement project. Additional work includes milling and resurfacing on Front Street in Sunbury and Bridge Avenue in Upper Augusta Township, overhead sign replacement on the Thomas Edison Bridge, epoxy overlay and lighting upgrades on the Thomas Edison and Joseph Priestley bridges, guide rail upgrades, tree trimming and pavement markings. Work on this project is anticipated to be completed in November 2026.
