Clearfield, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) updated drivers on its Atherton Street (Route 3014) project, which stretches from Curtin Road to just north of Westerly Parkway in State College, for the start of August. Motorists traveling through the work zone can expect the following the week of August 14:
- Monday, August 14, through Thursday, August 17, two crews will remove the old roadway structure, install new inlets and drainage pipe, and prep for the pouring of new curb between Beaver and West Foster avenues. This work will take place in the already closed lanes. PennDOT does not expect any additional traffic impacts.
- Monday, August 14, and Tuesday, August 15, a crew will install new water line between West Hamilton and Logan avenues with flaggers in the roadway enforcing an alternating traffic pattern.
- Wednesday, August 16, and Thursday, August 17, a crew will install new water line between Westerly Parkway and Center Lane. Flaggers in the roadway will direct pedestrian and vehicle traffic as the traffic signal will be in "flash" mode.
- No work is scheduled on Friday, August 18, or Saturday, August 19, to avoid impacting traffic for Penn State move-in.
- The right lane of Route 26 (Beaver Avenue) northbound heading toward downtown remains closed between H and Cresson alleys.
- A pedestrian detour remains in place. PennDOT urges pedestrians to use said detour and avoid walking through closed sidewalk signs into the construction zone.
- Message boards alerting motorists of the construction zone and changing traffic patterns remain in place.
- Please pay attention to the directional signage posted within the work zone to enhance safety and keep traffic moving efficiently.

Overall work on the project includes roadway reconstruction, drainage improvements that include pipes and inlets, water and sewer lines, concrete curbing, sidewalks and detectable warning surfaces, pavement markings, traffic signals and supports, and miscellaneous items.
HRI, Inc. of State College is the contractor on this $30.7 million project. PennDOT anticipates the contractor completing the project in the fall of 2024, but all work is weather and schedule dependent.
PennDOT reminds motorists that intermittent traffic stops are possible for short periods during work activities and urges drivers to use caution when traveling through the work zone. PennDOT also reminds drivers not to follow construction equipment into the closed lane and to use both lanes to the merge point to minimize traffic back-ups and shorten travel delays when approaching the work zone.
