PennDOT Removes Restrictions on Certain Vehicles in the Pittsburgh Region

High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) Lanes to remain closed

Pittsburgh, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has lifted the temporary restrictions on certain vehicles from traveling on several roadways in southwestern Pennsylvania.

Due to the winter storm impacting the region, PennDOT temporarily restricted certain vehicles from using the interstates to help ensure that the interstates remained open during the most challenging conditions of the winter storm.

The vehicle restrictions reflecting Tier 4 of the commonwealth’s weather event vehicle restriction plan have been removed from the following District 11 roadways:

Allegheny County

  • Interstates 79, 279 (Parkway North), 376 (Parkways East and West), and 579
  • Route 28

Beaver County

  • Interstate 376 (Beaver Valley Expressway)

Lawrence County

  • Interstate 79
  • Interstate 376

Tier 3 of the commonwealth’s weather event vehicle restriction plan, remains in place on these roadways. Speed limits will continue to be restricted to 45 mph on these roadways, in addition to Routes 28 and 65 in Allegheny County and Route 65 in Beaver County, for all vehicles. Commercial vehicles not affected by other roadway restrictions must move to the right lane.

On roadways with Tier 3 restrictions in place, no commercial vehicles are permitted EXCEPT loaded single trailers with chains or approved Alternate Traction Devices. Additionally, all school buses, commercial buses, motor coaches, motorcycles, RVs/motorhomes and passenger vehicles (cars, SUVs, pickup trucks, etc.) towing trailers are not permitted on affected roadways while restrictions are in place.

Additionally, the I-279 and I-579 High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes in the City of Pittsburgh and Ross Township, Allegheny County, will remain closed until crews are able to safely reopen to traffic. Additional information will be provided in advance of reopening the HOV lanes.

Motorists can check conditions on major roadways by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information and access to more than 1,200 traffic cameras. 511PA is also available through a smartphone application for iPhone and Android devices, by calling 5-1-1, or by following regional X alerts.

Motorists should always allow plenty of space when driving near plow trucks. Also, for their own safety and the safety of plow operators, motorists should never attempt to pass a truck while it is plowing or spreading winter materials.
