Pittsburgh, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is announcing the I-279 and I-579 High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes in the City of Pittsburgh and Ross Township, Allegheny County will reopen to traffic today, Friday, November 14 weather permitting.
Emergency pier work on northbound I-579 was completed on Monday, November 3. The HOV lanes remained closed as crews worked to replace barrier, remove and reestablish signage, conduct paving and line striping, and test the gate system. The HOV lanes are anticipated to reopen at approximately 3:00 PM Friday. The HOV lanes will remain open in the outbound direction for the duration of the weekend. Normal hours of operation will resume on Monday morning, November 17.
Crews from Swank Construction conducted repair work to bridges on I-579. The long-term repair work followed previous inspection activities where the department found significant deterioration on several piers on I-579 and the I-579 HOV lanes. Out of an abundance of caution, traffic was shifted on mainline I-579 and completely removed from the I-579 HOV lanes while analysis was conducted. Repair work requiring the closure of I-579 has been completed. Pier repair work will continue from below the bridges and have limited impact to traffic.
