Pittsburgh, PA – oday, and local officials highlighted the accomplishments of the 2025 construction season, includ $512 million in infrastructure investments in Allegheny, Beaver, and Lawrence counties spotlight upcoming work on the I-376 Commercial Street Bridge replacement project.
“The Shapiro Administration is dedicated to continuing to invest in our Pennsylvania roadways and bridges to enhance the commute and safety of the customers we serve,” said PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll. “We are proud to announce with the infrastructure funding in the greater Pittsburgh region this year, PennDOT District 11 delivered dozens of quality projects for local residents and others traveling through.”
PennDOT has been hard at work improving Pennsylvania’s roads and bridges throughout the year, improving more than 4,800 miles of road, including over 1,400 miles of paving, and beginning work to repair, replace, or preserve 368 bridges from January through October of this year.
Overall highlights in the 2025 construction season for District 11 include:
● 49 projects put out to bid.
● Approximately 724 miles of paving and roadway maintenance.
● 44 bridges repaired or replaced, including 13 in poor condition.
● 42 slides repaired.
“Having $512 million invested in our region’s construction projects allows the Department to conduct meaningful work within the communities we serve. We want to thank the public for their patience and understanding while we work to deliver safe and reliable roads and bridges to southwestern Pennsylvania,” said District 11 Executive Jason Zang. “The I-376 Commercial Street Bridge replacement project is a prime example of how invaluable the public’s cooperation is as we utilize an innovative process to significantly reduce the duration and impact to the local residents, businesses, and over 100,000 vehicles that drive it daily.”
The Commercial Street Bridge replacement project, located between the Edgewood/Swissvale (Exit 77) interchange and Squirrel Hill Tunnel in Swissvale Borough and the City of Pittsburgh, will utilize Accelerated Bridge Construction techniques to slide the new bridge onto the existing alignment of I-376 (Parkway East). This is one of the largest lateral slide projects performed in Pennsylvania. The $95 million project began in June 2024 with the reconstruction of the westbound I-376 off-ramp to Forest Hills/Wilkinsburg (Exit 78B). Also last year, a temporary relocation of Commercial Street and the Nine Mile Run Trail below the bridge occurred.
