PennDOT Encourages Safe and Sober Driving Ahead of Super Bowl Sunday

Indiana, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) District 10 is reminding drivers that if you're heading out to a Super Bowl party, make sure you plan a designated driver to get you home safely.

Every day, about 37 people in the United States die in drunk-driving crashes - that's one person every 39 minutes.  Drunk driving deaths are preventable.  Alcohol reduces brain functions and impairs thinking, reasoning and muscle coordination. All these abilities are essential to operating a vehicle safely.  Even a small amount of alcohol can affect your driving ability.

Alcohol is not the only substance that can impair driving; illegal prescription and over-the-counter medications can also lead to impairment. Additionally, combining medications with alcohol can amplify alcohol's effects, resulting in even more significant impairment.

Statewide police statistics show that there were 40,823 driving under the influence (DUI) arrests in 2023. There were 28,020 charges for drugged driving filed in 2023.This represents more than 35% of all charges filed under the DUI law.

Whether you are attending a party or going to a bar or restaurant, make a game plan and follow these simple tips for a safe and happy evening:

  • Plan your safe ride home before game day, choose a non-drinking friend as a designated driver.
  • Drinking and driving is never acceptable. Even if you've had only one alcoholic beverage, designate a sober driver, plan to use a ride service, or call a taxi or sober friend to get home safely.
  • If you see a drunk driver on the road, call 911.
  • If someone you know has been drinking, do not let that person get behind the wheel. Take their keys and arrange to get your friend home safely.
  • Always wear your seat belt – it’s your best defense against impaired drivers.

If you’re hosting a party, prepare plenty of food and non-alcoholic drink options for your guests.
