Indiana, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is announcing that the Route 66 crash has been cleared and motorists should revert to the originally announced detour route.
To detour, motorists should exit I-80 Eastbound at Exit 53: Route 338 - Knox, travel north on Route 3007 to Route 338 East to Route 208 East to Route 322 East in Shippenville. Motorists should continue on Route 322 East to Route 66 South and reenter I-80 Eastbound at Exit 60. Motorists should use caution in the area and along the detour route. The roadway will remain closed until the scene is cleared at a time to be determined.
A speed limit restriction remains in effect in Clarion and Jefferson Counties between Exit 45: PA 478 – St. Petersburg/Emlenton and Exit 97: Route 219 – DuBois/Brockway. Speed limits are restricted to 45 miles per hour for all vehicles, and commercial vehicles must move to the right lane.
While avoiding or delaying unnecessary travel during winter storms is the safest choice, PennDOT offers this advice if motorists must travel and encounter snow squalls or blowing or drifting snow:
- Slow down gradually and drive at a speed that suits conditions.
- Turn on your headlights. If caught in a snow squall, turn on your hazard lights.
- Stay in your lane and increase your following distance.
- Stay alert, keep looking as far ahead as possible and be patient.
- Do not drive distracted; your full attention is required.
- Use your defroster and wipers.
- Keep windows and mirrors free of snow and ice.
- During whiteouts, come to a complete stop only when you can safely pull off the roadway.
- Do not stop in the flow of traffic since this could cause a chain-reaction collision.
- Do not pass a vehicle moving slowly or speed up to get away from a vehicle that is following too closely.
- Always buckle up and never drive impaired.
- Have an emergency kit handy. Here are some suggestions of what you could include in your emergency kit.
