Travel, Speed Restrictions Remain on Interstates in the Northwest Region

Drivers Reminded to Avoid Unnecessary Travel, Be Aware of Black Ice on Roadways

Due to the continuing winter weather and icy conditions, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has temporarily reduced the speed limit and restricted travel by some vehicles on all interstates in the northwest region.

PennDOT advises drivers avoid or delay unnecessary travel during winter storms.

While PennDOT crews will continue to treat the roadways until the storm has passed and all cleanup is complete, drivers are reminded that roads may look wet but could be frozen. Black ice is difficult to see and makes roads very slippery. Use additional caution on bridges and ramps.

For more information on safe winter travel, visit www.PennDOT.pa.gov/winter.

Vehicle restrictions in accordance with Tier 3 of the commonwealth’s weather event vehicle restriction plan are in place on Interstate 79, Interstate 80, Interstate 86, and Interstate 90 in the northwest region.

On roadways with Tier 3 restrictions in place, no commercial vehicles are permitted EXCEPT loaded single trailers with chains or approved Alternate Traction Devices. Additionally, all school buses, commercial buses, motor coaches, motorcycles, RVs/motorhomes and passenger vehicles (cars, SUVs, pickup trucks, etc.) towing trailers are not permitted on affected roadways while restrictions are in place.

Speed limits will be restricted to 45 mph on these roadways for all vehicles while the vehicle restrictions are in place, and commercial vehicles not affected by the restrictions must move to the right lane.

Additional restrictions on are in place on interstates throughout the state. Check www.511pa.com for the latest information on restrictions.
