PennDOT to Begin Frankford Avenue Bridge Rehabilitation in Philadelphia

Philadelphia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that construction will begin on Monday, March 16, on a $10 million project to rehabilitate the bridge that carries Frankford Avenue over Frankford Creek in Philadelphia.

Drivers are advised of the following travel restriction:

Local access will be maintained at all times. Drivers are advised to allow extra time when driving near the work area because backups and delays will occur. The schedule is weather dependent.

Under this project, PennDOT’s contractor will rehabilitate the 123-year-old single-span bridge, which is listed in poor condition. On average over 12,000 vehicles use this bridge daily. The proposed superstructure will match the existing bridge, shoulder, and sidewalk widths. The project will also install a barrier along East Hunting Park Avenue from Frankford Avenue to Torresdale Avenue, between the sidewalk and Frankford Creek.

The proposed bridge will maintain the existing wrought iron railing on the outside of the sidewalk. The railing will be restored wherever possible, and matching railing will be fabricated as needed. The inactive SEPTA trolley lines that run across the existing structure will not be replaced on the proposed structure.

C. Abbonizio Contractors, Inc. of New Jersey, is the general contractor on this project, which is financed with 100 percent federal funds.
