Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) invites the public to an in person open house meeting or online plans display regarding the Camp Betty Washington Road pavement widening, bridge replacements and safety improvements project. This project is located in York and Springettsbury townships, York County.
The purpose of the project is to provide a safer roadway corridor for the traveling public and replace two structures that are considered structurally obsolete.
The scope of the work for this approximately 3-mile project consists of roadway widening to allow for two 11-foot travel lanes and 4-foot shoulders, overlay and safety improvements on Route 2005 (Haines Road and Camp Betty Washington Road) from Route 2002 (Springwood Road) to approximately 1,500 feet south of Route 124 in Springettsbury and York townships, York County. Other proposed improvements include two bridge replacements over Mill Creek or its tributary, the addition of an unsignalized northbound left turn lane on Route 2005 at Chestnut Hill Road, drainage, guide rail, signing and pavement marking upgrades. Additional safety improvements along the corridor include laying back slopes and/or trimming trees to improve sight distance, minor curve realignment and roadway slope corrections, and removal of rock outcrops
The project corridor is situated in a rural area surrounded by residential properties, wetlands and water sources, forested area and the Mill Creek Preserve.
Environmental studies completed for the project have included evaluations of natural, cultural, and recreational resources.
Traffic control will consist of the two bridge replacements on Route 2005 being completed using single lane staged construction with temporary traffic signals. Pipes replacements greater than 36 inches are to be completed using weekend detours. The roadway widening and overlay is to be completed using daily single lane flagging operations.
The project is currently in design, and construction work is anticipated to begin in the Winter/Spring of 2026, starting with vegetation clearing, utility relocations, and the bridge replacements. The total construction time for the project is anticipated to take two years, ending in the Fall of 2027.
The public open house meeting is scheduled for 5:00 to 8:00 PM Thursday, June 15, 2023, at the York Township Building, 190 Oak Road, Dallastown, PA 17313, to share information. There will be no formal presentation. The public meeting materials will also be available online as a convenient and alternative means for viewing. The digital version of the information will be available to view online beginning June 13, 2023, and the comment period runs through July 15, 2023.
