Bridge Repair, Paving Planned at Night Next Week, Continuously Next Weekend on U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway) in Philadelphia

Philadelphia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that bridge repair and paving operations will occur at night next week and continuously next weekend on U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway) under a project to rehabilitate the Wayne Junction Viaduct and repair and repave the decks of the Twin Bridges over the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.

Motorists are advised of the following travel restrictions:

  • Monday, July 15, through Wednesday, July 17, from 8:00 PM to 11:00 AM the following morning, periodic single and double lane closures are planned on northbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway) between Interstate 76 and Fox Street for bridge deck repairs.
  • Monday, July 15, through Wednesday, July 17, from 6:00 PM to 5:30 AM the following morning, periodic single and double lane closures are planned on southbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway) between Fox Street and I-76 for bridge deck repairs.
  • From 6:00 PM Thursday, July 18, to 5:30 AM Monday, July 22, periodic double lane closures will be in place on northbound and southbound U.S.1 (Roosevelt Expressway) between I-76 and Fox Street for bridge deck repairs, paving, and line striping.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work areas because significant backups and delays will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

The work on the Twin Bridges will repair the riding surface and extend the life of the two river crossings at the critical junction with I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway). Repairs to the Twin Bridges were added to PennDOT's original $100.6 million project to rehabilitate the Wayne Junction Viaduct that was substantially completed in 2023.
