Mifflintown, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced work on a bridge replacement project in Juniata County will start Monday, June 5. The bridge spans Locust Run along Route 3002 (Old 22 Road/Main Street), approximately two miles west of Thompsontown in Walker Township, and replacing it will improve its condition rating from "poor" to "good."
PennDOT initially announced work would start Tuesday, May 30, but a delay in receiving signage and scheduling issues caused a delay. PennDOT does not expect the later start date to impact the anticipated completion date of mid-August, but all work is weather dependent.
While replacing the bridge, the contractor will close the road at the intersection of Old 22 Road/Main Street and Route 2007 (Locust Run Road). Traffic will be detoured onto Route 22 via either Route 75 at the Port Royal interchange or Route 333 at the East Salem/Thompsontown interchange.
This project also involves a full-depth reconstruction of the roadway at the intersection. Later this summer, a separate detour will be implemented for five days while the contractor completes the reconstruction. PennDOT will update drivers on the project with the new detour information before reconstruction work begins.
Overall work on the project includes removing the existing bridge, constructing its replacement concrete box culvert, approach paving, guide rail installation, pavement markings, and miscellaneous construction. HRI, Inc. of State College is the contractor on this $755,000 project. PennDOT anticipates completion in mid-August, but all work is weather dependent.
