Two Interstate 95 Ramps at Front Street to Reopen This Weekend in South Philadelphia

Both I-95 ramps will close again May 11-21

Philadelphia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that the ramp from Front Street to northbound I-95 and the ramp from southbound I-95 to Front Street in South Philadelphia will reopen to traffic from Friday afternoon, May 8, to Monday morning, May 11. The ramps have been closed for several weeks while crews perform roadway widening and other improvements under a $56.1 million project to repair interstate bridges and ramps across the region.

Motorists are advised that ramp from Front Street to northbound I-95 and the ramp from southbound I-95 to Front Street will be closed and detoured again beginning Monday morning, May 11, through Thursday, May 21, to allow crews to complete the ramp improvements.

During the 24/7 closure, Front Street motorists will be directed to use Oregon Avenue and turn left onto Columbus Boulevard to access the ramp to northbound I-95.

Southbound I-95 motorists will be directed to exit at Broad Street (Route 611), turn right onto Broad Street (Route 611), and turn right onto Packer Avenue to access Front Street.

Drivers are advised to allow extra time when traveling near the work area or along the detour routes because backups and delays will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

Under this contract, PennDOT’s contractor will make repairs to the deteriorated bridge decks, superstructure components, and portions of the substructures as needed.

Work on the superstructures will include repairing fabricated structural steel, weld cracks, prestressed concrete beams, reinforced concrete bridge deck, bridge railing, guiderail, and steel sign supports; and replacing existing expansion joints, seal existing deck joints, and existing strip seal glands on the bridge decks.

Work on the substructures will include repairing or reconstructing bearing pedestals, steel fixed bearings, and deteriorated portions of concrete substructure; cleaning bridge seats; resetting expansion bearings; and removing debris from under the bridges.

In addition to bridge repairs, 11 overhead steel sign structures will be cleaned and repainted. Existing roadway lighting will also be upgraded to LED luminaires.

IEW Construction Group, Inc. of Hamilton, N.J., is the general contractor on the project, which is financed with 100 percent federal funds.
