Philadelphia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that overhead construction will close a section of Columbus Boulevard in Center City Philadelphia beginning on Sunday night, May 17. The work is part of the $329 million I-95 CAP project to replace and expand the covered area over the interstate between Chestnut Street and Walnut Street.
Motorists are advised of the following travel restriction:
- Sunday, May 17, through Thursday, May 21, and Tuesday, May 26, through Thursday, May 28, from 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, Columbus Boulevard will be closed and detoured in both directions between Spruce Street and Callowhill Street.
During the closures, northbound motorists will be directed to turn left onto Spruce Street, turn right onto 5th Street, and turn right onto Race Street to access Columbus Boulevard. Southbound motorists will be directed to turn right onto Callowhill Street, turn left onto 6th Street, turn left onto Pine Street, turn left onto Front Street, and turn right onto Spruce Street to access Columbus Boulevard. Signs will be posted along the detour routes.
Access will be maintained to and from the Hilton Hotel and the Seaport Museum at Penn’s Landing.
Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling near the work area or along the detour routes because backups and delays may occur.
The closures will allow PennDOT’s contractor to install 18 of the 80 beams needed to cover lanes over Columbus Boulevard. Work to complete the installation of the remaining beams over I-95 North and Columbus Boulevard is expected to begin sometime this fall.
