Philadelphia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that construction will begin on Monday, May 12, on a project to improve safety and traffic flow by constructing a roundabout at the intersection of Castor Avenue and Wyoming Avenue in Philadelphia.
Motorists are advised of the following travel restriction:
- Monday, May 12, through Thursday, May 29, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, a weekday lane closure with flagging is scheduled on Castor Avenue between Orthodox Street and Wingohocking Street.
Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work area because backups and delays may occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.
PennDOT plans to convert the intersection into a modern roundabout as part of this safety improvement project. The project will involve redesigning the approach geometry and narrowing the circulatory roadway to help reduce vehicle speeds while navigating the roundabout. Additionally, green stormwater infrastructure, including a water quality chamber and separate stormwater sewers, will be implemented to effectively manage excess paved areas and decrease runoff into the nearby Frankford Creek.
The design will incorporate new sidewalks and upgrade all crossings to meet ADA standards. Bicycle ramps will be added to ensure that cyclists can navigate the roundabout safely. Trackless trolley poles will be relocated as needed, and transit stops will be improved for better user accessibility. The intersection will undergo milling and overlaying where feasible to prevent the need for full-depth reconstruction.
This project aims to enhance safety at the intersection of Castor Avenue and Wyoming Avenue by reconstructing the existing roundabout, narrowing exit lanes, and providing ADA-compliant crossings.
Road-Con, Inc. of West Chester, PA, is the general contractor on the $5.1 million project, which is financed with 100 percent federal funds.
