Public Transportation Studies

The following studies have been conducted on topics of interest for public transportation.  These studies provide information on the economic impact of public transportation, its future sustainability, and the implementation of new services across the Commonwealth.

Shared Ride Studies

The shared ride program provides on demand transportation in every county in Pennsylvania. This service is open to the general public and certain populations such as Seniors, Persons with Disabilities and individuals who qualify for Medicaid receive subsidized trips.  These reports examine ways to improve management, operations, and fiscal sustainability in this program.

Microtransit Study

In Pennsylvania, several transit agencies have implemented pilot programs or are continuing microtransit service, particularly in areas where traditional fixed-route transit is not effectively serving the community. This technical memorandum provides an analysis of microtransit services offered by six Pennsylvania transit agencies, to characterize these services and the communities they serve and identify common themes associated with successful microtransit services.

Statewide Economic Impact Study

Pennsylvania is served by a range of public transit and passenger rail options, including transit agencies serving urban and rural regions, community transit agencies providing shared-ride service, and Amtrak intercity rail service.  Published in July 2021, Pennsylvania's Investment in Public Transit and Passenger Rail Study, quantifies the benefits of these services to Pennsylvania's residents, businesses, and its economy and the importance of continued investment to Pennsylvania's future.
