Minor Delays Expected on Route 653 (Main Street) in Rockwood, Somerset County, Beginning March 30 for Streetscape Improvements

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is informing drivers of minor delays on Route 653 (Main Street) in Rockwood, Somerset County, from Monday, March 30, to Friday, April 10, 2026, for streetscape improvements.

Drivers can expect lane restrictions and short, intermittent delays on Route 653 (Main Street) between Bridge Street and Market Street in Rockwood for traffic control sign deployment and clearing activities in anticipation of a streetscape improvement project.

CH&D Enterprises, Inc., New Stanton, Pa., is the lead contractor for the $721,761.74 project, which includes replacing sidewalks, curbing and ADA curb ramps on Main Street between Chestnut Street and Rock Street. The project is scheduled for completion in August 2026.

As always, PennDOT stresses extra caution in all work zones. Drivers should drive slowly, eliminate all distractions, and stay alert for direction from advanced signage and flaggers.

Additionally, PennDOT reminds motorists that as of June 5, 2025, the "Paul Miller's Law" is in effect. This law prohibits the use of hand-held devices while driving, even while stopped temporarily due to traffic, a red light, or other momentary delay. Violation of this law is punishable by way of summary citations issued by any Pennsylvania Law Enforcement officer. We strongly urge motorists to make safe choices, put phones out of reach and don’t text and drive.
