District 9 - Somerset County

Construction Update for Somerset County May 26 through June 5

As always, PennDOT stresses extra caution in all work zones. Drivers should drive slowly, eliminate all distractions, and stay alert for direction from advanced signage and flaggers.

Minor Delays Continue through June 5 on U.S. 219 (Flight 93 Memorial Highway) in Somerset County for Boynton Bridge Replacement Project

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is advising drivers of minor delays on U.S. 219 (Flight 93 Memorial Highway) through Friday, June 5, 2026, as the construction of a permanent replacement for the Boynton Bridge continues.

A temporary bridge beside the structure is in place to allow continued traffic during construction. The permanent replacement for the flood-damaged bridge will be built on a direct alignment with U.S. 219 and is expected to be completed in October 2026.

Charles J. Merlo, Inc., Mineral Point, Pa., is the lead contractor for the $2,272,000 project to build a permanent replacement of the Boynton Bridge over Piney Creek.

Minor Delays Continue on U.S. Route 219 (Flight 93 Memorial Highway), with detour of T-685 (Miller Road), in Somerset County for Miller Road Bridge Replacement

Minor delays from long-term lane closures on U.S. 219 (Flight 93 Memorial Highway) and a detour of T-685 (Miller Road) under U.S. 219 in Somerset County continue through Friday, June 5, 2026.

Long-term lane closures are in effect in both the northbound and southbound lanes of U.S. 219 as work continues on the Miller Road bridge replacement with contractors completing the MSE (mechanically stabilized earth) wall, an engineered retaining structure used to support highway overpasses and bridge abutments.

T-685 (Miller Road) under U.S. 219 remains under a 4.7-mile detour, which uses Route 4017 (Horner Church Road) in Quemahoning Township, U.S. 30 and Route 4025 (Ralphton Road) in Jenner Township.

New Enterprise Stone and Lime Co., New Enterprise, Pa., is the lead contractor for the 3-year, $24,600,000 million project that includes paving, the renovation of multiple bridge-structures, and drainage, guide rail and signage upgrades along five (5) miles of U.S. 219, from the Route 601 interchange to U.S. 30 interchange in Somerset, Lincoln, Quemahoning and Jenner townships, Somerset County. The project’s anticipated completion date is November of 2026. The project is weather dependent.
