Open house set for March 31; Online plans available for viewing beginning March 24
Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that an in-person open house is scheduled for the Route 222-071 Reconstruction Project, which includes full depth reconstruction, widening, and pavement preservation on Route 222 from just north of Eden Road at Stoner Park to just south of Bushong Road in Manheim Township, Lancaster County.
The open house will be held from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Wednesday, March 31, at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, PA 17601.
As an alternative to attending the open house, a separate public plans display will be available to view online beginning Tuesday, March 24. A comment period will begin March 24 when the plan displays become available for viewing. Comments will be received through April 30, 2026.
The purpose of the project is to implement improvements that address pavement deficiencies and meet current design criteria while improving safety and maintaining mobility through the project limits, reducing congestion and travel times.
Route 222 within the project limits consists of two 12-foot travel lanes with a 10-foot outside shoulder and 8-foot inside shoulder in both the northbound and southbound directions. A 60-foot grass median is present between the northbound and southbound lanes.
Between the southern limit and the Jake Landis interchange ramps, Route 222 will be widened into the median to create a six-lane section with three 12-foot travel lanes with 12-foot inside and outside shoulders in each direction. At the interchange, the outside northbound lane will become the off-ramp to Butter Road. Conversely, the southbound on-ramp from Oregon Pike will become the outside southbound lane on Route 222.
The northbound and southbound lanes will be separated by concrete median barrier.
The Route 222 profile will be modified to provide a minimum of 16 feet-6 inches of vertical clearance underneath the bridges that carry Landis Valley Road and Hunsicker Road over Route 222.
The reconstruction/widening section will include rehabilitation of the Landis Valley Road and Hunsicker Road overhead bridges. This section may also include sound barrier walls if recommended by the noise studies to be completed during preliminary engineering.
Between the end of the reconstruction/widening section and the northern limit of the project, the scope will include pavement preservation with mill and overlay. This section includes the northbound and southbound ramp gores for the Jake Landis interchange. No geometric changes are anticipated to these ramps. This section will include rehabilitation of the Route 222 bridges over Jake Landis Road and Kurtz Run, the Route 222 bridges over Creek Road and Lititz Creek, and the Butter Road bridge over Kurtz Run.
The project will also update drainage and stormwater management facilities, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) devices, guide rail, signing, and pavement markings.
The project is currently in the preliminary engineering phase and physical work is anticipated to take place between the 2028 and 2030 construction seasons, subject to all approvals, environmental clearances, and funding availability.
Beginning Tuesday, March 24, information, including plans and interactive comment forms, can be found by visiting the PennDOT District 8 website, PennDOT District 8, clicking Projects Near You listed on the left side of the page, then clicking District 8 Projects, and choosing Route 222 Reconstruction Project.
A press release will be issued when the plans display is available for viewing.
The purpose of the online display and open house is to introduce the project and receive public input regarding any questions or concerns.
Comments will be received through April 30, 2026.
