PennDOT Celebrates Early Completion of St. Peters Road Retaining Wall Project in Warwick Township

Project completed and road reopened a month ahead of schedule.

Warwick Township, PA – Today, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) local officials celebrated the early completion of the St. Peters Road Retaining Wall project within St. Peters Village Historic District in Warwick Township, Chester County. The road was reopened today, one month ahead of schedule.

“Every year, thousands of visitors come to St. Peters Village to take a step back in time,” said Secretary Carroll. “It’s our responsibility to ensure that folks can travel through this area safely, and this work is helping to preserve and protect this historic landmark.”

For several years, erosion of the steep slope between St. Peters Road and French Creek created unstable conditions leading to a slope failure which impacted the guiderail system and compromised the reliability and safety on St. Peters Road.

In June 2022, a concrete barrier was installed to protect St. Peters Road drivers from the deteriorating conditions. Additional inspections indicated additional slope deterioration, and that an additional 432 feet of concrete barrier was needed, along with a long-term detour.

In July 2024, PennDOT began designing a project to improve the conditions. However, due to an expansion of the slope failure, the department pursued an emergency proclamation in April 2025, to allow for the placement of the additional concrete barrier and expedite the start of the improvement project. The proclamation allowed PennDOT to use existing contracts to construct a permanent 570-foot retaining wall to stabilize the roadway embankment and protect drivers.

“Restoring this critical corridor preserves this historic destination while ensuring safe, reliable travel for years to come,” said PennDOT District 6 Executive Din Abazi. “We are proud of the hard work by our staff and the contractor to deliver this project to the community.”

Loftus Construction of King of Prussia, Pa., was the general contractor on this $6.8 million design-build project which was financed with 100 percent state funds.
