Overhead CAP Construction to Close I-95 North, I-676 West Ramp at Night Next Two Weeks in Center City Philadelphia

Philadelphia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that overhead construction will close a section of Interstate 95 North and the ramp to I-676 West at night over the next two weeks in Center City Philadelphia, beginning on Sunday night, May 3. The work is part of the $329 million I-95 CAP project to replace and expand the covered area over the interstate between Chestnut and Walnut streets.

Motorists are advised of the following travel restrictions:

  • Sunday, May 3, through Thursday, May 14, from 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, I-95 North will be closed and detoured Sundays through Thursdays between the Washington Avenue/Columbus Boulevard (Exit 20) and I-676 Central Philadelphia/Callowhill Street (Exit 22) interchanges. During the closure, motorists will be directed to exit at Washington Avenue/Columbus Boulevard, turn left (north) onto Columbus Boulevard, and use the ramp at Summer Street to access I-95 North.
  • Sunday, May 3, through Thursday, May 14, from 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, the ramp from I-95 North to I-676 West will be closed and detoured. During the closure, motorists will be directed to travel north on Columbus Boulevard, turn left onto Spring Garden Street, and turn left onto 8th Street to access the ramp to I-676 West.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling near the work area or along the detour routes because backups and delays may occur.

The upcoming closures will allow PennDOT’s contractor to install 18 of the 80 beams needed to cover lanes over northbound I-95. Following this operation, similar work will begin to install 18 of 80 beams over Columbus Boulevard. Work to complete the installation of the remaining beams over I-95 North and Columbus Boulevard is expected to begin sometime this fall.
