Philadelphia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that construction is scheduled next week on Interstate 95 at the Bridge Street Interchange ahead of a traffic shift that marks the completion of southbound reconstruction and widening between Carver and Margaret streets in Northeast Philadelphia.
Motorists are advised of the following travel restrictions:
- Wednesday, May 27, from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, a single lane closure will be in place on I-95 in both directions between the Cottman Avenue and Betsy Ross Bridge interchanges for traffic shift preparations.
- Wednesday, May 27, and Thursday, May 28, from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, the Longshore Avenue ramp to I-95 South at the Cottman Avenue Interchange will be closed and detoured for traffic shift preparations. Motorists will be directed to travel south on New State Road, south on Tacony Street, and south on Aramingo Avenue to access the ramp to I-95 South at the Bridge Street Interchange.
- Thursday, May 28, from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, alternating double lane closures will be in place on I-95 in both directions between the Cottman Avenue and Betsy Ross Bridge interchanges for traffic shift preparations.
- Thursday, May 28, from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, the Cottman Avenue ramp to I-95 South will be closed and detoured for traffic shift preparations. Motorists will be directed to travel south on New State Road, south on Tacony Street, and south on Aramingo Avenue to access the ramp to I-95 South at the Bridge Street Interchange.
- Friday, May 29, from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, double lane closures will be in place on northbound I-95 between the Bridge Street and Cottman Avenue interchanges, and the Bridge Street ramp to I-95 North will be closed and detoured for barrier repairs. Motorists will be directed to travel north on Tacony Street/New State Road and north on Milnor Street to access the ramp to I-95 North.
Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work areas or along the detour routes because significant backups and delays will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.
The lane and ramp closures will allow crews to place construction barriers and paint new lane markings in preparation for a new traffic pattern that will move three lanes of southbound I-95 traffic approaching Bridge Street onto the newly rebuilt southbound lanes early Friday morning. Northbound traffic will remain on the northbound side of the work area.
Following the shift, work will get underway to prepare the median for a shift in late summer to move northbound traffic to the median area of the interstate for the start of northbound reconstruction and widening.
The work is part of PennDOT’s $267.9 million I-95/BS2 project to reconstruct I-95 in both directions between Margaret Street and Carver Street, including a new Bridge Street Interchange and replacement of the I-95 bridge over Fraley Street.
