All Lanes Reopen on Route 29 (Morehall Road) Following Sinkhole Remediation in East Whiteland Township

Additional work is planned on Route 29 (Morehall Road), Quarry Hill Road under Stage 4 Construction

King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that all lanes on northbound and southbound Route 29 (Morehall Road) have reopened following sinkhole remediation under the $22.5 million project to provide long-term remediation on Route 29 (Morehall Road) in East Whiteland Township, Chester County, and on U.S. 202 (Dekalb Pike) in Upper Merion Township, Montgomery County.

While all lanes have reopened on Route 29 (Morehall Road) in both directions, remaining work will continue under Stage 4 of the project, including replacement of a stormwater pipe in front of Quarry Hill Road, restoration of the median between northbound and southbound Route 29 (Morehall Road), and completion of the southbound swale lining work.

Short-term travel restrictions will be announced prior to the next stage of construction.

Under this project, PennDOT’s contractor utilized a limited mobility grouting program, which involved drilling a series of holes through the pavement in a “grid” pattern. Pressurized grout was injected into the drilled holes to fill subsurface voids beneath the roadway. The filling of subsurface voids will help stabilize the ground beneath the pavement and will reduce the risk of future sinkholes. Additional work included drainage improvements and pavement reconstruction.

Sinkhole remediation projects on Route 29 (Morehall Road) and U.S. 202 (DeKalb Pike) were deemed necessary for a long-term solution following reoccurring sinkholes and emergency repairs resulting in traffic disruptions along both corridors.

Heidelberg Materials, LLC of northeast region, is the general contractor on this project, which is financed with 100 percent federal funds.
