Dunmore, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) invites the public to a plans display regarding the Route 29, Section PRS, over Susquehanna River bridge rehabilitation project. This plans display will be held online.
The SR 29 Section PRS bridge rehabilitation project addresses the priority 1 maintenance recommendations for poor condition of rocker bearings on the existing six-span steel bridge carrying SR 29 (Bridge Street) over the Susquehanna River. The scope of work for this project includes replacement of all bearings at the abutments and pier 3, spot painting the new bearings, joint replacements, concrete repairs at the superstructure, debris removal, and bridge cleaning. Roadway work includes crack sealing at the far approach.
Permanent right-of-way acquisition and temporary construction easements will not be required. Earth disturbance is anticipated to be limited to within existing legal right-of-way. No utility impacts are expected from the proposed construction.
The Susquehanna River is present within the project limits. Potential involvement with endangered or threatened species includes the Northern long-eared bat (NLEB) and Indiana Bat. Consultation with USFWS will be completed.
Public recreational resources in the project area include River Street Park and the Susquehanna River Water Trail. Coordination with Tunkhannock Borough will be completed to assess any use of River Street Park and coordination with PFBC will be completed to assess any use of the water trail under Section 4(f) regulations. The Tunkhannock Historic District (National Register-listed) and the Lehigh Valley Railroad (National Register Eligible) are located in the project area. Coordination with the Pennsylvania State Historic Preservation Office (PASHPO) will occur as part of the Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) regulations.
Traffic will be controlled utilizing short-term single-lane closures during construction. Flaggers will be utilized for single-lane two-way traffic while signs and channelizers will be utilized to close a lane for multi-lane traffic conditions.
The project is expected to bid in December of 2026, with construction to begin in Spring 2027 and progress through Autumn 2027. One construction season is anticipated for this project.
The plans display will be held online and will be available from May 20, 2026, to June 22, 2026.
