PSP, PennDOT Announce Increased Impaired Driving Enforcement Ahead of Memorial Day

Lewistown, PA –Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) Troop G have teamed up to promote safe and sober driving in Mifflin and Juniata counties during the month of May and the upcoming Memorial Day holiday.

Throughout the month of May, and running through Memorial Day Weekend, troopers in the Lewistown area, as well as throughout Mifflin and Juniata counties, will conduct DUI checkpoints and increased roving patrols. In addition to increased DUI enforcement initiatives, troopers will also focus attention on distracted driving, seatbelt usage, and on aggressive driving, which includes behaviors such as speeding, tailgating, running red lights, and passing in no passing zones.

“These efforts are about proactive enforcement—getting impaired drivers, or otherwise dangerous drivers off the road before crashes happen,” said Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Jacob Rhymestine. “At the end of the day, this isn’t about making arrests, it’s about preventing tragedies and keeping our roads safe. That is why we are informing the public ahead of this increased enforcement initiative, hoping that they’ll take this seriously and choose not to engage in risky behavior.”

Troopers advise that if you encounter a checkpoint, it is intended to be a brief and routine stop. Drivers are asked to have their license and registration ready, and to follow directions, and that individuals will be processed through the checkpoint quickly.

“As we head into the Memorial Day weekend, enforcement will increase statewide.

This is one of the busiest travel times of the year, and we do see an increase in DUI-related crashes,” Rhymestine added.

During last year’s Memorial Day Driving period, May 23, - 26, 2025, there were a total of 108 alcohol related crashes across the commonwealth, resulting in four fatalities and 85 injuries. During that same timeframe, there were 42 drug related crashes, resulting in one fatality and 34 injuries.
