PennDOT, Local Police Highlight Aggressive, Distracted Driving Awareness

Pittsburgh, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and the Moon Township Police Department hosted a media event to highlight the dangers surrounding aggressive and distracted driving.

PennDOT partnered with the Moon Township Police Department to conduct an aggressive driving enforcement during the current wave which runs from March 18 to April 26. Aggressive driving is one of the leading factors of highway crashes and fatalities in Pennsylvania. During the enforcement period, police will target drivers demonstrating unsafe behaviors such as speeding, careless driving, heavy truck violations, pedestrian safety, red light running, tailgating, and other aggressive driving actions.

According to PennDOT data, in 2024 there were 5,897 crashes involving aggressive driving statewide, resulting in 106 fatalities. Of those crashes, more than 970 occurred in Allegheny County, resulting in 3 fatalities.

Additionally, law enforcement will be looking for drivers who are driving distracted. The event comes just days ahead of April’s National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

PennDOT and Moon Township Police representatives discussed the negative impacts of distracted driving and Paul Miller’s Law, which was signed into law June 5, 2024; effective as a warning June 5, 2025; and fines begin June 5, 2026.

According to PennDOT data, in 2024 there were 9,950 crashes involving distracted driving statewide, resulting in 49 fatalities. Of those crashes, 1,285 occurred in Allegheny County, resulting in no fatalities. Distracted driving crash data is believed to be underreported due to many drivers’ reluctance to admit to being distracted at the time of a crash.
