Roundabout at Sassafras Street Construction Nearly Complete

Work to complete the roundabout at the intersection of the Bayfront Parkway and Sassafras Street Extension will entering the final phase next week.

Work to complete the roundabout at the intersection of the Bayfront Parkway and Sassafras Street Extension will entering the final phase next week.

In connection with the work, the traffic pattern will be changing at Sassafras Street Extension and the Bayfront Parkway. The temporary traffic signal will be removed next week, and eastbound traffic will be shifted to the other side of the future roundabout.

Traffic on Sassafras Street Extension will be able to turn right (westbound) onto the parkway only. Drivers wanting to go eastbound will be detoured to West Front Street Extension and State Street.

The traffic shift is expected to start on August 12, 2025, and remain in place for several weeks.

Full access from Sassafras Street Extension to the parkway will be restored and the roundabout will be opened prior to the start of the closure of the Bayfront Parkway surrounding State Street on September 2, 2025.

State Street remains closed between the parkway and Second Street. A vehicle detour is posted using Holland Street, East Third Street, and the Bayfront Parkway. A pedestrian detour is posted using West Third Street, Holland Street, and East Front Street.

Temporary pedestrian access along State Street is planned for August 21 to 24, 2025 to accommodate the expected increase in foot traffic during the Tall Ships Erie Festival.
