Plans Call for Demolition of Beckman Road Bridge over Interstate 90 in Girard Township, Erie County

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today the planned removal of the bridge that carries Beckman Road over Interstate 90 in Girard Township, Erie County.

The bridge is located on Beckman Road (Route 3105) approximately 0.3 mile south of the intersection of Beckman Road and Tannery Road (Route 3018).

The project will include removing the upper portion of the existing bridge, known as the superstructure, and the pier.

Work is expected to occur in during the 2025 construction season. A portion of the demolition work will require the use of lane closures and rolling traffic stops of both directions of Interstate 90 between Exit 16 (Route 98, Franklin Center, Fairview) and Exit 9 (Route 18, Girard, Platea).

The bridge was struck by large vehicle in February 2025 and was immediately closed. Several beams suffered significant damage and the bridge remained closed for the safety of the traveling public.

The current 4-mile detour for the bridge will remain in place. It is posted using Tannery Road, Sterrettania Road (Route 3018), Keefer Road, and Franklin Road.

The 205-foot bridge was built in 1959. It is rated in poor condition and is posted with a vertical clearance of less than 14 feet for traffic in the westbound lanes of I-90. It is used by approximately 125 vehicles a day, on average.

The structure is scheduled to be replaced in 2028 as part of a project to reconstruction Interstate 90 from mile marker 10.5 to mile marker 18.
