A multi-year project to repair the bridge that carries Route 59 over the Kinzua Creek (Allegheny Reservoir) in Mead Township, Warren County is scheduled to restart soon.
The project includes making concrete and steel structural repairs, spot painting, and navigational lighting.
Construction started last year and included concrete pier encasements and concrete repairs.
Work will restart March 24, 2025, weather permitting, and is expected to be completed by late fall 2025.
One lane on the bridge will remain closed across a portion of the bridge throughout the duration of the work. Traffic is being controlled by temporary signals.
There will also be two 48-hour period detours that will take place sometime after Labor Day. The detour will be posted using Route 6 and Route 321 (Kane-Marshburg Road). Notification of the detour periods will be given through message boards near the work site and an announcement from the PennDOT press office.
An Aids to Navigation Plan has been coordinated with the PA Fish and Boat Commission and temporary signs for boating traffic along the channel will be posted during construction.
The steel truss bridge was built in 1962. It is rated in fair condition. It is 1,812 feet long and carries approximately 1,000 vehicles a day on average.
The contractor is L.C. Whitford Company Inc. of Wellsville, NY. The contract cost is $6,082,432, which is to be paid entirely with federal funds.
