The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is advising motorists to expect delays beginning Monday, March 17, 2025, on Route 56 (Quaker Valley Road) from Route 96 (Cortland Road) in Alum Bank to I-99 near Cessna in Bedford County
Contractors will conduct tree trimming on the route from March 17 to March 21 under daylight flagging, with the potential for traffic delays not to exceed 15 minutes. The work is weather dependent.
As always, PennDOT stresses extra caution in all work zones. Motorists should drive slowly, eliminate all distractions, and stay alert for direction from advanced signage and flaggers.
The work is part of a 6.9-mile, $7,290,201.17 resurfacing project of Route 56 (Quaker Valley Road) from Route 96 (Cortland Road) in Alum Bank to I-99 near Cessna, omitting the Fishertown area, and will include the replacement of the bridge over the Barefoot Run tributary just east of Pleasantville, as well as full-depth shoulder upgrades from Route 96 to the Barefoot Run bridge; drainage and guide rail upgrades; epoxy overlay of the Dunnings Creek bridge; channel cleaning of Barefoot Run, and various pavement markings.
Beginning in June, the project will implement a 27-mile, evening/overnight weekend (7:00 PM Friday to 6:00 AM Monday) detour to reroute traffic on Route 96 (Cortland Road) to Route 30 (Lincoln Highway) to Route 56 (Pensy Hollow Road/Quaker Valley Road).
Granns Bros. Stone & Asphalt Co., Inc., of Hollidaysburg, is the contractor for the project, which is tentatively scheduled to be completed in November 2025.
