PennDOT Announces Online Plans Display for Route 234 (East Berlin Road) and Stoney Point Road Intersection Project Near Hampton, Adams County

Companion project to East Berlin Road and Peepytown Road project; Open house for both projects is May 8

Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) invites the public to an online plan display regarding the Route 234 (East Berlin Road) and Stoney Point Road intersection safety improvement project. This project is located in Reading Township, approximately 0.75 miles east of the Village of Hampton.

The purpose of this project is to improve safety and address future traffic demands for the Route 234 intersection with Stoney Point Road. Geometric deficiencies in the roadway limit sight distance along Route 234 and are being addressed with the proposed project.

This project may consist of safety improvements, which may include an intersection skew angle change, relocation of the Township-owned leg or convert it to a roundabout to improve safety and traffic flow with several potential alternatives.

The project will be constructed in stages and a detour along Stoney Point Road is anticipated. During the reconstruction of the south leg of Stoney Point Road (Route 1007), the proposed detour route will use Route 94 (Carlisle Pike) then Route 234 (East Berlin Road). During the reconstruction of the north leg of Stoney Point Road (T-529), the proposed detour route will use Hoovers School Road (T-546) then Route 234 (East Berlin Road). The use of detours and traffic control measures along Route 234 will be determined once an intersection alternative is selected.

The project is currently in the alternatives analysis phase, and work is anticipated to take place during the 2027 construction season, subject to all approvals, environmental clearances and funding availability.

Information, including the roadway plans and an interactive comment form, can be found by visiting the PennDOT District 8 website PennDOT District 8, clicking Projects Near You listed on the left side of the page, then the District 8 Projects, and choosing East Berlin Road and Stoney Point Road Safety Improvements Project.

This digital version of the information will be available to view online from May 1, 2025, to May 30, 2025. Public comments will be received during this 30-day period.

The purpose of the plans display is to introduce the project and receive public input regarding any questions or concerns with the project.

This is a reminder that an open house is scheduled for 6:00-8:00 PM Thursday, May 8, 2025, at the Reading Township Community Center (Firehall) along South Firehouse Alley in the Village of Hampton to share information and get input on the proposed alternatives for this project as well as the companion East Berlin Road and Peepytown Road Safety Improvement Project.
