Philadelphia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that construction activities will occur at night next week on Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expressway) in Philadelphia under a $36.8 million project to resurface and repair nearly five miles of the interstate, the associated on-and-off ramps, and more than 20 bridges.
Motorists are advised of the following travel restriction:
- Monday, July 15, through Wednesday, July 17, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, the ramp from westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) to U.S. 1 South (City Avenue) will be closed and detoured for bridge deck repair and guiderail installation. Motorists will be directed to continue west on I-76, exit at Belmont Avenue and use I-76 East (Schuylkill Expressway) to access U.S. 1 South (City Avenue).
- Tuesday, July 16, from, 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, a right lane closure will be in place on westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) between Spring Garden Street and Montgomery Drive for paving.
- Tuesday, July 16, from, 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, the ramp westbound I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) to Montgomery Drive will be closed and detoured for paving. Motorists will be directed to continue on I-76 West (Schuylkill Expressway), exit at Belmont Avenue and use I-76 East (Schuylkill Expressway) to access Montgomery Drive.
- Wednesday, July 17, through Saturday, July 20, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, the ramp from U.S. 1 South (City Avenue) to I-76 West (Schuylkill Expressway) will be closed and detoured for bridge deck repair and guiderail installation. Motorists will be directed to use I-76 East (Schuylkill Expressway), exit at Montgomery Drive to access I-76 West (Schuylkill Expressway).
- Thursday, July 18, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, the ramp from I-76 East (Schuylkill Expressway) to Girard Avenue/Philadelphia Zoo will be closed and detoured for guiderail and attenuator installation. Motorists will be directed to continue on I-76 East (Schuylkill Expressway), exit at Spring Garden Street, and use I-76 West (Schuylkill Expressway) to access Girard Avenue/Philadelphia Zoo.
Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through or near the work areas because backups and delays will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.
Under this contract, PennDOT's contractor will mill and overlay I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) pavement from U.S. 1 to I-676; perform concrete base, shoulder and barrier repair and replacement as needed; construct minor grade adjustments for existing inlets at select locations; replace damaged signs; install new pavement markings, delineators and rumble strips; and perform bridge repairs.
