Centre County Traffic System Management Project Starting Monday

Clearfield, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced it will start the installation of Intelligent Transportation System devices along Route 322 and Interstate 99 in Centre County Monday, July 14. Once installed, these devices will aid in traffic control by allowing PennDOT’s Regional Traffic Management Center to monitor roadway conditions and activate Changeable Message Signs (CMS) to update motorists in the event of changing weather conditions or traffic backlogs resulting from increased traffic volumes or crashes.

The contractor will start work on Route 322 by installing a CMS in the median at Sand Mountain/Sandcrest Road and another along the westbound shoulder half a mile from Stone Creek Road/Laurel Creek Reservoir. While this work will take place off the roadway and have minimal, if any, impact on traffic, drivers may encounter short-term lane closures during daylight hours and are urged to exercise caution while traveling through the work zone.

Locations along Interstate 99 to see work as part of this project are as follows:

  • Mile marker (MM) 59.8 northbound.
  • MM 62.4 southbound.
  • MM 64.1 southbound.
  • MM 66.3 southbound.
  • MM 67.4 in median.
  • MM 70.0 southbound.
  • MM 72.8 southbound
  • Exit 75/Shiloh Road at PennDOT maintenance stockpile
  • MM 79.1 in median.
  • MM 80.5 northbound
  • MM 83.7 in median.
  • MM 84.8 southbound.

Work on this project includes the installation of cameras, traffic counters, slow vehicle warning systems, junction boxes, conduits, directional boring, and miscellaneous construction. Penn Line Service, Inc. of Scottdale, PA, is the contractor on this $1 million project. PennDOT expects work to continue until late January, but all work is weather-dependent.

Motorists can check conditions on major roadways by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information, and access to more than 1,000 traffic cameras. 511PA is also available through a smartphone application for iPhone and Android devices, by calling 5-1-1, or by following regional X alerts.
