Bridge Replacement Project on Route 19 in Springfield Township, Mercer County to Start Soon

A $1.98 million project to replace the bridge that carries Route 19 over Johnston Run in Springfield Township, Mercer County is scheduled to start March 17.

The bridge is located on Route 19 by Rachel’s Roadhouse, between the intersection with Leesburg Station Road and the intersection with Creek Road.

Work will include bridge demolition, excavation, as well as new abutments, box beams, concrete deck and barriers. There will also be minimal asphalt paving, guiderail updates, as well as new pavement markings.

Construction is expected to begin March 17, 2025, weather permitting, and to be completed by October 20, 2025.

One lane of the bridge will remain open throughout the project with traffic controlled through the use of a temporary signal. This signal is expected to be set on flash mode on March 17 and fully operational on March 25 once the temporary barrier is installed.

Drivers should be alert for traffic pattern shifts and lane restrictions and anticipate travel delays.

The existing steel I-beam bridge was built in 1928. It is classified as poor condition. Approximately 2,800 vehicles a day use the bridge, on average.

The contractor is Chivers Construction Company Inc., of Fairview, PA. The contract cost is $1,979,470 which is to be paid entirely with federal funds.
